Prayer of one persecuted by men (St Ignatius Brianchaninov)

I thank You, my Lord and God, for all that has happened to me! I thank You for all the sorrows and temptations that You sent me for the cleansing of those defiled by sins, for the healing of those wounded by sins, my soul and body!

Have mercy and save those instruments that You used to heal me: those people who insulted me. Bless them in this and the next age! Impute to them as virtues what they did for me! Appoint for them abundant rewards from Your eternal treasures!

What did I bring to You? What pleasing sacrifices? - I brought only sins, only violations of Your most divine commandments. Forgive me, Lord, forgive the guilty before You and before men! Forgive the unresponsive! Grant me to be convinced and sincerely admit that I am a sinner! Grant me to reject wicked excuses! Grant me repentance! Grant me contrition of heart! Grant me meekness and humility! Grant me love for my neighbors, love that is pure, the same for everyone, both those who comfort and those who insult me! Grant me patience in all my sorrows! Mortify me to the world! Take away my sinful will from me, and plant in my heart Your holy will, that I may do it alone with my deeds, and words, and thoughts, and feelings.

To You be the glory for everything! To You alone belongs the glory! My only property is shame of face and silence of lips. Standing before Thy terrible judgment in my poor prayer, I do not find in myself a single good deed, not a single virtue, and I stand, embraced on all sides by the countless multitude of my sins, as if by a thick cloud and darkness, with only one consolation in my soul: with hope in Thy boundless mercy and goodness. Amen.
