ROCOR stance on the Moscow Patriarchate before the 2007 apostatic union

"Orthodox Rus'" and the Moscow Patriarchate

Until it fell into the hands of the Sergianist-Ecumenists, the church-public organ "Orthodox Rus" was always a spiritual beacon pointing the way to Christ's Truth. Such foreign pillars as Archbishop Vitaly (Maksimenko), Archbishop Averky (Taushev), and Archimandrite Konstantin (Zaitsev) served on the magazine's editorial board. Excerpts from "Orthodox Rus" illustrate the traditional relationship of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to the Moscow Patriarchate.

"An important decree of the Catacomb Church. Canonical decisions of the Holy Council of the Catacomb Church. For example, one of the decisions forbids the faithful from receiving spiritual guidance from clergy legalized by the anti-Christian government."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1949, No. 17, p. 15).

“Diocesan Congress of the Western European Diocese of the ROCOR, November 27-28, 1949: “The Russian Church Abroad expresses the consciousness of the persecuted Russian Mother Church and denounces the lies and servility of the Moscow Patriarchate.”

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1949, No. 24, pp. 17-19).

From the Message of the Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in 1950: “The Church Abroad remains outside of any communion with the Moscow Patriarchate, but embraces the confessorial feat of the Secret Catacomb Church, which preserves its faith in a clear conscience.”

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1950, No. 23-24, pp. 2-3).

“The Catacomb Church in Russia and the Russian Church Abroad stand on the canonical path of truth, while the Moscow Patriarchate has departed from Christ’s Truth and has become an obedient instrument of the godless authorities.”

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1951, No. 1, pp. 4-8).

“We are flesh of the flesh and blood of the blood of the Catacomb Church within Russia, but reliance on the Patriarchal Soviet Church is a break from God .”

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1951, No. 11, pp. 1-2).

"The faithful are rejecting the counterfeit Soviet Church as a false church and are retreating into the 'trails,' taking the true Church with them. The ROCOR extends its embrace to the Russian Orthodox people—to the hidden true Mother Church."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1953, No. 9, pp. 1-3).

“The truly Orthodox Russia is not the one that is oriented toward the MP, this deceptive guise of godless Sovietism, but the one that is connected with the Catacomb Church.”

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1953, No. 18, pp. 1-2).

“The Russian Church Abroad has never recognized and can never recognize the Soviet Church and its deceitful false patriarchs Sergius and Alexy.”

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1956, No. 12, pp. 6-7).

"Message of the Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in 1956 to the God-loving flock: The Church Abroad remains, as before, outside of canonical and prayerful communion with the so-called Patriarch Alexy and his co-workers, for in Russia only the Catacomb Church still preserves the purity and fidelity to the spirit of the ancient Apostolic Church."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1956, No. 23, pp. 1-3).

At the Tenth Diocesan Assembly in 1957, Metropolitan Anastassy spoke of the " impassable abyss " separating the Church Abroad from the Soviet Church, which was imprinted with the stamp of lies. "We are inextricably linked with the Mother Church of the Catacombs , which is persecuted by the Soviet Church."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1957, No. 10, pp. 4-7).

In his 1961 Appeal to the Entire Christian World, Metropolitan Anastassy captured the true position of the ROCOR: "Many prominent hierarchs refused to follow Metropolitan Sergius's path of compromise—a secret, or 'catacomb,' Church was formed, which exists in Russia to this day, and which the Soviet press calls 'a sect of true Orthodox Christians' and 'followers of Patriarch Tikhon.' The ROCOR considers itself to be in spiritual unity with this secret Church, and not with the Moscow Patriarchate , headed by the uncanonically elected Patriarch Alexy."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1961, No. 22, pp. 1-3).

Archimandrite Konstantin (Zaitsev): " It is ungodly to perceive the Soviet Church as some kind of legitimate channel of ecclesiastical activity parallel to the Church Abroad. Currently, only the Catacomb Church—no other—is such a channel."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1963, No. 19, pp. 7-8).

"Factual information: The Soviet Church is fulfilling the Soviet regime's mandate to convince the entire world that it is the true Russian Church. In fact, the true Church, the Tikhonite Church, went underground after the 'Sergianist' agreement and continues to exist there to this day."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1964, No. 21, p. 8).

"Pastoral Conference of the Clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in North America and Canada in 1969: The Soviet Church is captivated by Satanocracy, and the struggle is waged against the true Church—the Catacomb Church, with which the ROCOR stands in solidarity. The head of the ROCOR, Metropolitan Philaret, is commemorated by the Catacomb Church."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1969, No. 18, pp. 8-10).

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1970, No. 13, pp. 8-9).

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1970, No. 20, pp. 2-4).

"Professor Znamensky G.A.: "The Catacomb Church and the ROCOR have preserved the truth of Orthodoxy, and they are not on the same path as the MP, a blind slave of the godless authorities ."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1970, No. 21, p. 10).

Archbishop Averky (Taushev): "Our persecuted brothers and sufferers in the Homeland have distanced themselves from the Soviet Moscow Patriarchate, which has apostatized from Orthodoxy, and have long since begun to call themselves not simply 'Orthodox,' but 'True Orthodox Christians.' We are of one mind and one spirit with them."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1971, No. 11, pp. 2-3).

"Archbishop Nikon (Rklitsky): "To recognize the Moscow Patriarch as the head of the Russian Orthodox Church in modern conditions means condemning the Catacomb Church, means refusing the duty of the Church and its hierarchy to inspire the Russian people to spiritual rebirth."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1972, No. 8, pp. 4-5).

“The ROCOR must, as it has done until now, remind everyone that the statements of the current Moscow Patriarchate, often directly dictated by the enemies of the faith, should not be recognized as the voice of the Russian Church , nor as any kind of obligation for it.”

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1974, No. 21, p. 12).

"Archbishop Anthony of Los Angeles: "The Catacomb Church quite clearly and openly calls the new Martyrs and Confessors saints... Sergianism has distorted the teaching about the Church..."

"The 1981 message of Metropolitan Philaret to all the faithful children of the ROCOR on the occasion of the approaching glorification of the New Martyrs of Russia: "That part of the Russian Church that did not recognize the godless authority as legitimate and did not submit to it, went into the catacombs, and the hierarchy of the official church submitted to the godless authority and acts according to its instructions."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1981, No. 11, pp. 1-3).

"The Moscow Patriarchate hasn't changed since the time of Patriarch Sergius, so the Church Abroad is not on the same path with it. The ROCOR is akin to the True Orthodox Church in Russia—the Catacomb Church."

"For the first time in the history of the Church, Patriarch Alexy (Simansky) proclaimed a litany in Moscow 'for the health and salvation of the great Russian leader, Joseph Stalin...' Another blasphemy committed by the patriarch is calling new martyrs for the Christian faith political or criminal offenders. This compromise with the persecutors of the Church of Christ is not the path of Orthodoxy. The true Mother Church resides in the catacombs, does not pray for the atheists, does not desecrate churches , and does not apostatize from Orthodoxy."

(“Orthodox Rus'”, 1947, No. 20, pp. 13-14).

"Just as two concepts – God and Satan, truth and falsehood – are opposed, so on the Russian land there are two irreconcilable concepts: the Josephite Church, which has gone into the catacombs, and the Sergianist Church – the Antichristian, godless, and deceitful one in the USSR."

"Metropolitan Sergius does not hear the voice of the Spirit of Truth , the Spiritual Council; the 'Soviet patriarch' has united with the spirit of the Antichrist . But the Russian Church is alive: in Russia, it is secret, in the catacombs; here, it is openly present—in the person of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia."
